Area guide - Platanias
Platanias

Platanias is a small seaside village, situated in the South part of Pelion, 65 km to the Southeast of Volos.

From the first moment, Platanias fascinates the tourist with the beauty of the scenery and the aquamarine waters caressing its beaches. Platanias offers the visitor the opportunity to escape from the noise and stress of the city and relax enjoying the gracious nature.

It is a picturesque fishermen village stretching along the beach. It has a harbour and a long seafront ideal for walking. It also has a fish-wharf and a small marina for pleasure boats, a lot of taverns, cafes, ouzeries, shops and rooms to let. It is a beautiful and well-ordered place, widely known for its fresh fish and seafood, that attracts visitors all year long.

From Platanias beach, the visitor can enjoy a magnificent daybreak, with the sun rising out of the sea and a wonderful view of Skiathos island in the background. The sound of the fishing boat comes to fill the marvellous setting. Slow and cadential, if the motor is diesel, rough and sharp, if its outboard. The fishing boat comes into sight and in a couple of minutes it approaches the shore. People are gathered around the boat to watch the catch. If the night was lucky, there would be pandoras, sargoses, little dentexes, black seabreams, even crabs and lobsters. However, one can always find sardines, anchovies, sand smelts, mackerels, octopus and cuttlefish.

The closest beach to Platanias is Mikro, in the west part of the village. A footpath leads the visitor there in just 10 to 15 minutes. Access to the beach is also possible by caiques. Mikro is a long beach of remarkable beauty, with clear waters and beautiful lush scenery.

Other beautiful beaches of the area in the east of Platanias are Vamvakia, Ftelia, Rodachia (which is known for the wrackholes), Kastri, Lepetous, Paliourakia, Vromoneri, Vlachorema, Theotokos, Liri and Mourtias. In the west of Platanias, the visitor can find the beaches Kaloidis, Panagioti, Krifolimnionas and Chondri Ammos.
